The San Foundation is proud to be part of the hospital's rich history and plays a vital role, raising funds for many worthy projects and enhanced care programs. Bequests are an important source of income for us. Including a gift to the Foundation in your Will allows the San to continue to meet the healthcare needs of our community for many years to come.

Donations, bequests and grants from individuals and philanthropic organisations are integral to the Foundation's ability to support the San. The San Foundation aims to assist the Hospital achieve its mission statement by raising funds for many worthy projects, programs, equipment and excellent care.

How a gift in your Will can help us achieve our Vision

One of the most important ways you can help the work of the San Foundation in the future is by including a bequest (gift) in your Will. Without bequest income, the Foundation would not be able to continue to support the wonderful work of the dedicated and passionate team at the hospital.

When creating your Will, firstly provide for your family and friends; and then consider whether you can include a gift to the San Foundation. Whether large or small, every gift is greatly valued because it will help make a real difference to someone's life. Your Will is a reflection of your wishes and the legacy you want to leave.

Types of Bequests

Your solicitor or trust company can give you more information, but in general there are a number of forms your charitable bequest can take:

• Specific – This is a specific gift of property, shares, jewellery, works of art etc. that you choose to leave the San Foundation.
• Whole of Estate – Sometimes when there are no surviving relatives you can bequeath the whole of your estate.
• Residual – This is the residual of your estate after specific bequests, debts and charges are met which may be given to the San Foundation.
• Percentage – This is an amount intended as a bequest to the San Foundation which is expressed as a percentage. For example you may decide to leave 75% of your estate to the Foundation.
• Alternative – This allows the San Foundation to be nominated as an alternative beneficiary if another named recipient is unable to accept a bequest.
• Life Insurance – When you take out a Life Insurance Policy you can usually nominate a beneficiary, the person who you wish to receive the proceeds of the policy upon your death. If you do not nominate a beneficiary, then the proceeds of the Life Insurance Policy will be paid into your estate and will then be distributed in accordance with the terms of your Will. You can name the San Foundation as beneficiary of a new or an existing policy. We recommend you discuss your intentions with a Life Insurance Broker or your Financial Advisor.

Your Bequest – Your Choice

Your bequest can be directed to either of the following:

• The General Fund used to purchase much needed equipment and to enhance the hospital's services and facilities, or
• A specific area, such as a particular ward, department or facility (e.g. the Integrated Cancer Centre, Heart Care, Maternity)

Correct wording for a Bequest

If you would like to include the San Foundation in your Will, the proper legal wording is as follows:

"I give to the San Foundation ABN 73 479 353 649 for its general purposes or (insert, if you wish, name of the fund or specific purpose) the sum of $ _______________ or ____% residue of my estate, free of all duties and taxes and I declare that the receipt of its Managing Director or other authorised officer shall be sufficient discharge to my executors."

San Circle of Care

Your bequest will also allow you to be honoured in your lifetime by becoming a member of San Circle of Care, a special group of people who have chosen to support us in this significant way.

San Circle of Care is a group of generous people who have told us of their decision to include the San Foundation in their Will.

San Circle of Care is our way of recognising and honouring our members during their lifetime – when they are able to accept our heartfelt thanks and gratitude for their generosity in person.

San Circle of Care offers special invitations, exclusively for members and provides opportunities for members to meet one another and hear about the achievements and activities of the San and the Foundation.

Of course, we understand that you may wish to make your bequest anonymously.
