Hologic Selenia Dimensions screening machine funded by the San Foundation
1 in 8 women in New South Wales are currently at risk of developing breast cancer in their lifetime. The San has a BreastScreen NSW site where, through a government funded program, a free screening mammogram is available every two years to women aged 50 to 74. Through the generosity of the San Foundation a new Hologic Selenia Dimensions screening machine was recently purchased.
The Hologic Selenia Dimensions (HSD) screening machine provides new state of the art technology which increases the efficiency of the screening procedure and reduces discomfort to the client.
The new HSD machine has a wider detector on which to position the breast thus producing a reduction in the number of images required. Previously multiple images were required to be taken in order to scan effectively. Now, using the HSD machine, the whole area of the breast can be covered, meaning that in the majority of cases only one projection is required.
"The machine produces high quality images and the computer system which processes the image is state of the art. This is particularly helpful for scans on a younger breast (in the 40-50 age group) where the breast tissue is very fibrous. In these cases the quality and sharpness of the image is outstanding" said Nadine Thompson, San Radiology Chief Radiographer.
Along with producing a higher quality image, and reducing the number of images required, the HSD machine, also provides a more comfortable experience for the client. The composition of the compression panel is of a lighter weight and is made of softer material, which moulds to the breast and is softer on the breast tissue. For the operator the machine is easier to use and there is also an automatic release mechanism on the unit.
"Compared to my last scan there was definitely less discomfort than last time. Overall the procedure felt easier, more comfortable and quicker. When I rested the breast on the detector the temperature was more comfortable, not as cold. I felt as though I was under pressure for less time, this may be due to the fact that the release was automatic.
The staff here are lovely and always put me at ease. I am greatly appreciative of the reminder letter I receive from BreastScreen NSW to let me know when my next screening is due. I find this gentle reminder invaluable" said one patient.
"In our local community we have a high ageing population. These women are very conscious of maintaining good health and attend BreastScreen NSW at the San to have regular mammograms. The San Foundation through their funding for this machine are supporting and acknowledging the needs of women in the local community" said Trish Polson, BreastScreen NSW Section Manager, Sydney Adventist Hospital.
"The new HSD machine has provided BreastScreen NSW with the opportunity to work with state of the art technology, which we would not have within the centre if it were not for the generosity of the San Foundation.
Our long standing and loyal team assisting BreastScreen NSW at the San have been taking care of the local community for 22 years. We have always been grateful for the support provided to us by the San Foundation, the Hospital's IS Department, and both the Director of Radiology and Chief Radiographer at the San. We are greatly appreciative of the donation made to the department by the San Foundation. The purchase of the new screening unit will allow us to provide excellence in client service to our community" said Trish.
"We are delighted to support this project and make a difference to so many women’s lives" said Barbara Ward, Managing Director, San Foundation.
